Defensive can be played in response to Offensive Skills.

If an Offensive player plays a skill, you may opt to play a Reaction. If you choose to do so, you must take a 🧠BBIQ test. If you pass, you may play your Reaction card. If you fail, your second of the shot clock is wasted.

Reactions work a little differently than Offensive Skills; instead of 3 skills, Defenders have access to 2 skills and the ability to Guard.

Just like Offensive players, a Defender can always make a free Half-Move when playing a Reaction.

Guarding

Guarding is a passive reaction that can be used to make Offensive skill attempts more difficult, by keeping a Defender close to the Offensive players. Instead of playing a Reaction card, you will make one of your standard Move actions, and your positioning in relation to the Offensive player will determine if you are Guarding them or not.

To successfully 🛡️Guard an offensive player, you must fulfill one of these conditions:

  • the defender is within the ball handler’s 👁️Field of Vision, and is within 2 hexes of from the 🏀Ball Handler
  • the defender is outside of the ball handler’s 👁️Field of Vision, but is in a hex directly adjacent to the ball handler

the defender is outside of the ball handler’s 👁️Field of Vision, but is in a hex directly adjacent to the ball handler

If you are 🛡️Guarding an Offensive player who attempts a skill:

  • The offensive player’s Skill Target increases from 20 -> 24
  • If the offensive player fails the Skill attempt, they make a Mistake

Stealing

Stealing is a Reaction that can be played when 🛡️Guarding an Offensive player who is attempting to Dribble, or is involved in a Pass attempt (either as 🏀Ball Handler or Target).

When you pass your Reaction 🧠BBIQ test and play your Steal card, you will now get to directly challenge your opponent’s Skill roll by making one of your own.

Roll a single D20 and add the value to your STEAL stat value. This becomes the new Skill Target.

If the Offensive player’s skill is Perfect, the Defender makes a ⚠️Mistake.

If the Offensive player’s skill is Successful, nothing special happens.

If the Offensive player’s skill is Sloppy, the Defender immediately gains possession and can begin a Fast Break or start their Half Court Offense

If the Offensive player’s skill is a Fail, the Defender gains possession and the 🏀Ball Handler makes a ⚠️Mistake. Once the Mistake roll is complete, the Defender may begin a Fast Break or reset to their Half-Court Offense.

Blocking

When an Offensive player attempts a Shot while 🛡️Guarded, you can attempt to Block the shot.

Blocking a Shot follows the same process as Stealing. After passing a 🧠BBIQ test, you will be able to roll a single D20 and combine it with your BLOCK stat value to create the new Skill Target.

If the Offensive player’s skill is Perfect, the Defender makes a Mistake.

If the Offensive player’s skill is Successful, the shot goes in and nothing else happens.

If the Offensive player’s skill is Sloppy, the shot misses and a Rebound happens.

If the Offensive player’s skill Fails, it has been Swatted! When a ball is Swatted, you treat it as a Loose Ball, but the direction the ball travels is always directly away from the hoop. You still roll a D6 to determine the number of hexes it travels, starting from the hex of the Ball Handler.
